Young people in focus in manifestos

13 April 2010

Both Labour and the Conservaitve manifestos highlight the importance of getting young people into work.

Both Labour and the Conservative manifestos contain pledges to help the under 25s gain work, with Labour guaranteeing training or employment after 6 months of unemployment and the Conservatives 'personalised help' through private and voluntary sector providers.  Both commit to increasing training opportunities and more funding for apprenticeships and the Conservatives propose introducing an 'all-age careers service'.

The EFA's fight to broaden the eligibility of funding for apprenticeships continues.  While the drive to curb youth unemployment is welcome, it is vital that employers are able to provide training and opportunities to as diverse a group as possible and putting further are restrictions on funding can cause problems for employers.
