Duncan Smith says forced retirement at 65 is nonsense
28 May 2010
In his first speech as Minister for Work and Pensions, in which he outlined the Coalition's sweeping plans for reform of the welfare regime, Iain Duncan Smith also said that "the idea of someone being fired just because they turned 65 is nonsense" and that "people who are good at their job and want to work for longer should be able to do so". But, passing the parcel, he also confirmed that "this policy area rests with BIS, so the detail of how we do this is really their decision".
And Dr Cable and his team may still have to think hard about how they do it, since in an article in The Daily Telegraph this week, Louisa Peacock says the CBI remains opposed to the abolition of the default retirement age, quoting the view of its head of employment, Neil Carberry, that the DRA let individuals have a "dignified" conversation with their employers about when they planned to retire.
