Equality Act Implementation

5 July 2010

The Government Equalities Office announced on Saturday that "the first wave of implementation of the Equality Act will go ahead to the planned October timetable" and the first commencement order will be published in Parliament this week.

In the press release, Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities Theresa May said:

"By making the law easier to understand, the Equality Act will help business treat staff fairly and meet the needs of a diverse customer base. The law will be easier to understand and better able to protect people from discrimination.

"Implementing the Equality Act to the planned timetable makes clear our commitment to equality. A successful economy needs the full participation of all its citizens and we are committed to implementing the Act in the best way for business."

And today GEO launched the first of a series of "What do I need to know?" guides to the Equality Act, which can be downloaded here. Interestingly, although there had been speculation that the new Government might bridle at introducing the positive action measures, the guides are clear that these provisions will come into effect from October.

The EFA and EFB are running an Equality Masterclass on 14 July - More information here.
