High Court Decision On Heyday Fails To Put Retirement Age Into The History Books
24 September 2009
Rachel Krys, Campaign Director at the EFA says, "Today's decision is a missed opportunity to scrap retirement ages, and fails to recognise the changes and pressures in the modern workforce and society."Rachel Krys, Campaign Director at the EFA says, "Today's decision is a missed opportunity to scrap retirement ages, and fails to recognise the changes and pressures in the modern workforce and society. Employers who have already made the leap and removed retirement ages are reporting significant advantages, they have an older, experienced workforce bringing real business benefits. Instead of blocking opportunities for younger workers, older workers are passing on their skills, mentoring, working in dynamic mixed-age teams and developing with the business. "This is not the end of the story. The UK's ageing population and the recession has put more pressure on already stretched private pensions and the state pension scheme. More and more people need to work beyond 65, as a country we cannot afford to fund 25+ years of financially secure retirement." Despite today's decision, the Government has already committed to reviewing the current rules on retirement in early 2010. The Employers Forum on Age believes that those organisations planning now for a world without fixed retirement ages to be in a very strong position. The EFA has been campaigning for the removal of the default retirement age.
