BT
Policy review
BT are founder members of the Employers Forum on Age (EFA) and have developed a co-ordinated approach that has built age into all aspects of employment policy, and thereby realising the benefits of mixed age teams. BT are proud to be business leaders in the development of an integrated approach to career development, flexible working and flexible retirement - see EOR February 2005 - and DWP Flexible Retirement research downloadable from www.agepositive.gov.uk.
'Despite the inclusion of age within our approach to diversity, we felt it was essential to carry out an audit of all our policies to ensure an age neutral approach and to help guarantee fairness in advance of age laws." Caroline Waters, Director of People Networks gained the commitment of the Global Equality & Diversity Forum, which includes members of its operating board, for a comprehensive review of policies. She challenged them with a number of age related questions drawn from the EFA's '10 Essential Questions'.
An Age Action Team was formed of business leaders and policy heads and all were asked to respond to questions raised in the EFA's 'One Step Ahead' Policy Review Toolkit. The review process is still underway, but has already highlighted some practices that may no longer be appropriate and may need amending. It has been an excellent opportunity to reflect on long established procedures and ascertain whether they are still right for our people and our business.' Becky Mason, BT People Networks Manager.
