Notes to Editors:
Age stereotypes defunct
- Case studies of individuals and sponsoring employers are available.
- 1,603 people between the ages of 16 and 69 were surveyed between July and October 2004. Those surveyed were working or had worked at all levels, from manual labour to CEOs in the private sector. Private, public and not for profit sectors were all represented, and not all were in work: some respondents had already retired, were unemployed or out of work due to ill health.
- Age at work provides a detailed breakdown of the UK working population including gender, ethnic origin, employment status, and location split for each decade. It is a valuable reference tool for anyone interested in age and employment.
- The sponsors of Age at Work are: PricewaterhouseCoopers (20s); Barclaycard (30s); the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (40s); BT (50s); and Blue Arrow (60s).
- The Employers Forum on Age (EFA) is the leading campaigner on age issues in the workplace. It has over 175 UK member organisations that collectively employ over three million people - more than 14 per cent of the workforce. It offers expert advice to employers on managing the skills and age-mix of their organisations. Employers can join EFA by calling 0845 456 2495 or visiting www.efa.org.uk
- 2006 age legislation: the UK government must put in place age discrimination legislation by December 2006 to comply with the EU Employment Directive (Article 13). The new legislation will carry the same weight as earlier legislation on gender, race and disability.
Released on behalf of EFA by CHA. For further information, please contact Lizzie Barrett or Sarah Williams at CHA on 020 7622 8252, or visit www.chapr.co.uk.
