Clarity for Code of Practice
11 November 1999

Today, the Employers Forum on Age (EFA), whose members represent approximately 2 million employees in the UK, welcomes the code of good practice on age discrimination but urges the Government to provide employers with more support and direction over its future use.

'The Code is an important first step to removing ageism from the workplace,' says EFA's Campaign Manager Helen Garner. 'But if it is to make any impact on UK business it is essential that employers are given clear guidelines on how to use it, and indeed what are the consequences if they ignore the code.'

The fact that the Government has recognised the need for a code on ageism at work re-affirms the view of the members of the EFA – that ageism costs the UK economy and that there are significant business benefits to be gained from a mixed-age workforce.

The Employers Forum on Age will continue to consult with its membership, and will give a formal response to the Government at the end of the consultation period.
