Employers respond to single equality commission plans
15 May 2002

While the Employers Forum on Age (EFA) welcomes the Government's plans to introduce a single equality commission, our concern is whether a single commission will be able to maintain a balanced focus on each area of discrimination. As new areas of legislation age, religion and sexual orientation must be given equal weight alongside more established issues such as gender and disability.

The EFA campaigns for an age-diverse workforce and we will strive to ensure that a single commission confronts the full breadth of age discrimination in the workplace, encompassing issues relevant to both younger and older workers.

As we wait for the new commission to come into being the danger is that employers will be left in limbo. It is imperative that the Government consults widely with employers on the roles and responsibilities of the commission and acts quickly to provide clarification of proposed interim arrangements and timescales.
