Leading Employers Respond To DWP´S New Code Of Practice On Age Diversity
4 December 2002

Ms Sam Mercer, campaign director of the Employers Forum on Age, says:

´The Employers Forum on Age (EFA) has been an active supporter of the Government´s Age Positive campaign and welcomes the launch of the DWP´s new Code of Practice on Age Diversity, as part of Age Positive Week.

´The EFA campaigns for an age-diverse workforce and our members welcome the revised Code of Practice, which presents businesses with information on how to eradicate age prejudice from their employment practices before the 2006 age legislation deadline.

´However, employers are keen to emphasise that the action points provided in this Code of Practice, although helpful in recommending age diverse policies, will not necessarily protect businesses against future age-related legal claims. This Code of Practice does not constitute guidance for age discrimination legislation. While all the policy recommendations are sound, it must be made clear to employers that the content of the forthcoming legislation is only currently in the consultation phase. This means that businesses will need to keep track of the legislation and make the necessary adjustments in terms of age-proofing their policies.

´Employers are also warning that the DWP needs to learn lessons from the past in getting the age diversity message out – levels of awareness within the business community of the original Code of Practice, launched in 1999, are still relatively low.´
